Storm Turns One!
I have been photographing this family since their oldest daughter was 1. She is now 5! I am so blessed to have been invited back on their journey to capture their son's first birthday. The best thing about this session was everyone knew what to expect and we were able to get the most adorable photos.
For a cake smash session, it's literally just placing your baby back on the backdrop over and over and over again. Lol. Yes, you will get a workout Mom! It's very important for me to be able to gain baby's trust in a short amount of time, so I let them do their thing, explore, touch, grab, and sometimes "mess up" the decor. Don't worry nothing they touch on the backdrop can be destroyed badly and it's all baby proof. But letting them get a feel for the space and "play" always results in the best photos and they stay pretty calm and happy throughout the session.
Once we put the cake in front of them, they stay seated and either really go in on the cake or absolutely hate it. There is really no in between. In Storm's case, he actually did NOT like his cake after a few tastes. The icing was sweet and he wasn't used to eating anything with that much sugar. I typically recommend whipped frosting or even yogurt to coat a cake because most babies don't eat much sweet treats at 1 year old. But never-the-less, the point of a cake smash is to capture your baby's milestone moment, turning ONE, whether they eat cake or not.
Storm was a good sport and as you can see from below, we were able to capture all of his cuteness.
