Beginner's Guide: 3 Safe and Simple Newborn Photography Poses
Newborn photography can feel overwhelming when you are just starting out. So many tiny details, and things to remember makes it feel a lot of pressure to get it just right. But you don't need and long list of complicated poses to create adorable, meaningful images. With a few simple safe, natural, beginner-friendly poses, you can confidently capture timeless photos that focus on connection, comfort, and the sweetness of the first few days. As one of the best Orlando newborn photographers, I'm sharing with you 3 go-to newborn poses that are perfect for photographers who are just starting out and want to build their newborn posing foundation.
Curled Up
This position is super simple and only requires minimal work to get baby into position. You will simply lay baby on their back and either place hands over the chest or belly area, or let arms rest along both sides of the baby's body. Next you can curl the legs up by crossing one over the other and propping them up with a little pillow underneath their feet to hold the legs in position. This is a relaxed cute pose that shows off the baby's adorable face, fingers, and toes. This pose can be done with baby sleeping or awake.
Potato Pose
This pose is very versatile and one I consider a must-do during every newborn session. Swaddling the baby in a sort of potato looking style, makes for a series of really cute poses. It soothes the baby and they tend to fall into a deep sleep with this pose. If your baby is a little fussy or even awake, swaddling them with help out a lot, and like I said before, will ultimately help them drift right on off to sleep. All you need to do is wrap baby's legs and arms in the swaddle and you are all set. You can keep the arms in a bent position, laying on the chest, so that if you want to switch up the look, you can take easily take the hands out of the swaddle. They can be places on the baby's cheeks or simple folded down, or they can peek out to hold a cute little stuffed prop. There is a ton a variety with this pose and it's so simple to do especially for a beginner photographer.
Semi Swaddled Pose
This is pose is pretty much like a combination of the curled up and potato pose. You start off with the baby posed in the curled up position. Then you wrap the swaddle around the outer part of the baby, from the baby's bottom all the way around under the neck until you get to the end of the swaddle, which you can tuck the tip under baby to keep it in place. Or for a little pizzaz you can leave some swaddle out and let it trail off and away from baby. I like to do this pose and incorporate parents hands for a unique twist and to show how tiny baby was as a newborn.
Honestly a newborn session isn't about mastering complex set-ups. And although there is nothing wrong with that, there is a way to keep it simple and beautifully-breathtaking. These three beginner-friendly newborn photography poses are a reminder that safe natural posing and gentle connection will always outshine anything forced or overdone. As you practice, trust your hands, move slowly, and let baby lead. With time, these foundational poses will not only build your confidence behind the camera, but also train your eye to recognize this quiet, sweet moments that parents truly adore.
